I'm always confused by people who think the narrator in the poem is also the poet, but it does seem to be something that's frequently thought.
What really bugged me in the discussion I mentioned was that people were saying it should be, that lyric poetry was "for" that purpose, ie telling the truth about oneself. I don't think it's "for" anything but least of all for that!
