Is there a way of disabling LJ messages? I've gone through the FAQ but can't find it. I hardly ever remember to check them and it'd be much better (and less embarrassing) if folks couldn't contact me that way.

If you mean PMs, then you can control who is able to send them to you at Edit Profile (bottom option on the menu labelled Profile). The LJ User Messaging dropdown (under Contact Info) allows one to receive messages from 'nobody'. See Frequently Asked Question #305. What is the Inbox? How do I communicate with other LiveJournal users?

(It took me a couple of minutes to find it again, and I've set it before. I don't know why it isn't under account settings.)
