Did a quick interview-by-email for Metro on this yesterday, some of which is in this article. If I'd known at the time what Ewan Morrison was saying, I might have pointed out more forcefully that "originality" and "literary quality" are a long way from being synonyms and that mixing two widely disparate source properties wasn't first invented in the internet age. As for "They don’t know about story structure and they don’t know about characters"... don't get me started... I wonder how much, if any, he's read.

I am doing a fair job of ignoring the whole thing...

Well, at least they asked someone who knew what they were talking about.

I'm pretty sure that all Amazon is going to get for its money is Mary Sue vampire fic by 12-15 year olds (as opposed to hardcore gay porn by 40 year old housewives - which seem to be the only two forms of fanfic acknowledged by the media).

Still, at least my 'FanLib' icon is getting some use!

Fan Fic without Sex? I thought that Fan Fic was made of nothing else but various shades of Slash.

Having banned the *one* thing that made Fifty Shades of Grey commercially mainstream profitable (honestly did anyone buy it who wasn't looking for the sex?) makes me breathe a sigh of relief. Hopefully this will fail so fast and so hard that no one else thinks of monetizing fandom (for a while, no one mentions Fanlib's awesome flop, so I guess that's been forgot.)

That'll be the same Ewan Morrison who wrote this: http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2012/aug/13/fan-fiction-fifty-shades-grey proving he doesn't get fanfic at all. Via twitter I pointed him in the direction of "The Democratic Genre".

I saw the interview while heading home from work and picking up the Metro. You talked sense and that other bloke talked inflammatory Bolsheviks. I don't know what he's on. Granted some fanfic is crap, but he's incredibly up his own arse.
